The Admiral is the only one to attend every Uber due to the quirk
of the official Uber on the road in 2006, and the multiple Uber's in
2001, but a number of individuals have been to all but one.

history of the ubertailgater

Before the Uber....

As a football manager, there wasn't any tailgating during the student days. The first tailgate was in the parking lot of the Malabar with a bucket of Martin's fried chicken, with the SBPD really not happy with our music. The chicken was good, but something more was needed, and fortunately my family possesses a very certain set of very specific skills as it comes to tailgate decor and grilling meats.

The First Uber

The first Uber was in 2000, before it was even called the Uber, and was in the old Blue Field lot. It was quite eventful due to tailgating neighbors and Erik going for the Cheesy Mett eating record. But a great foundation was laid. The Uber name came in 2001, thanks to Joe Palmer - and had I only known how valuable that name would have been in a few years.

The Stadium Cake

Scholars disagree as to when the first stadium cake made its appearance, but it is certainly now a staple - and has grown due to the Campus Crossroads project. As with anything great about the food at the Uber, Katie Wolnitzek is responsible.

The Uber Today

The Uber has grown over the years, but it's always about celebrating good friends, Notre Dame Football, and food and drink. As 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

The History of the Admiral

The Admiral nickname was born during my manager days, thanks to the retro hat I wore to paint the helmets (back when that actually happened), seen here. The bill had the "scrambled eggs" on it, and fellow manager Joe Palmer is credited with the nickname that has survived through the years.

My Folks

As mentioned throughout, all of the great food and decor is thanks to my mom, Katie. And my dad Steve (class of '70) is why I'm a part of the ND family.

The Crew

Though more people help out on the Uber than I can mention, special thanks to Mike (who is always shotgun on gameday) and Justin, who does much in NKy to get things ready, and Tiffany, for being such a great sister-in-law.

John Hyduk

We lost Mr. Hyduk way too soon, but his spirit will always be part of the Uber with his friends and family gathered together. He always made the Uber better - mostly by pointing out various shortcomings. The picture commemorates a ceremonial presentation of horseradish, after its absence from the prior year was duly noted - by him.
